E-votional - A Direct Line
January 5, 2005

Verse:

“This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him.”

Ephesians 3:11-12(NRSV)

Thought:

The Trip was going to be difficult enough, so we decided to take a direct flight.  Straight from Houston to Kansas City.  Even with the troubles the airlines were having with luggage, we knew we needed to check our bags.  Car seats, kids and their things were more than enough for carry-ons.  Plus, we had a history with flying, we knew what to do and what not to do.  Almost the first one out of the gate, however, we were the last to leave the baggage claim area.  Why?  Our one suit case was not on the flight, nor did they have any idea where it was.  After speaking with the person in charge, they informed me we would not receive any type of help until after 24 hours, but if I wanted to pursue matters, I could call the 1 800 number for luggage issues.  Knowing this would be where I would find hope, I immediately called.  Recording.  Please press 1.  Please press 3.  If you would like to hear a recorded message, press 1 or remain on the line for the next available operator.  Your  wait time will be approximately twenty (pause) seven (pause) minutes.  After waiting and talking, I found the operator to not, in fact, be the decision maker, and there really was no recourse.  Why?!

Hear the Good News, when things are going crazy, wrong or we need to talk to the one in charge, we have a direct line to God.  Through Jesus Christ, we have direct access to our Creator.  In Paul's letter to the church in Ephesus he reveals a marvelous understanding to indescribable mystery. The Question has to be asked, why did Christ come? The answer, to give everyone, absolutely everyone direct access to God. As frustating as it is to use an automated service to get to the person we need during a time of stress, we can know that is not the process that God would have us use to reach Him. There is no "I'll check with my supervisor", with God You are talking with the Boss, the decision maker, the one in control.

By the way, we got our things back the next morning, but not after an unnecessary that is all we will do for you for the next 24 hours, even though we would be at the airport in 23. That is not what we get from God. From God, we get, "don't worry, it will be alright, amybe not what you want, but, it will all be right.

Prayer:

Gracious God, thank You for such a gift, the gift of Christ. He brings to my life a direct line, direct access to You. In Your gracious love and mercy, You offer comfort and strength when it is needed. Help me to remember that you are the One who is in charge and in control. But most of all, thank You for all You have done and all You continue to do. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Grace & Peace
