E-votional - The Words
June 24, 2002
Verse:

"“I will never again curse the ground because of humankind, for the inclination of the human heart is evil from youth; nor will I ever again destroy every living creature as I have done. As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease."

Genesis 8:21-22 (NRSV)

Thought:

Uttered from the lips of one, to the ear of another, the words either fall to the ground, or the words enter into the heart. These words point to the one speaking. They share a hint of a look at who the speaker is, and at the same time identify and even clarify the "who" of the recipient. The words, they are promises. The other difference between simple words spoken and a promise, it is called hope. Hope for the future.

Hear the Good News, we have a promise in Jesus Christ. He is the one who has built a bridge to God, when the only thing existing before had was a chasm. The bridge, the Cross, allows Christ to walk us across from the life we had and knew before coming into relationship with God, through Christ. And it is this very relationship which calls us to hear and believe the promise given to us, that allow us to hear the promise for more than mere words. It is the relationship, pointing to the past and the present, which allows us to have real hope for the future. And this relationship is based on our asking Christ to come into our life, giving up the burdens and obstacles of our past and present and asking Christ to come into our heart for a new present and accompanied future.

Prayer:

Gracious God, I know I bring elements into my life that definitely get in the way of having a great and fulfilling life with You. Help me to embrace the promise of life, the one for which You gave Your only begotten Son, that, if I believe in You, I will have. My life, I give it to You. Thank You for all that You have done in my life and all You will continue to do, for ask this through Christ, my Lord and Savior. Amen.
